Galle Dutch Fort: A Visitor's Guide

A UNESCO World Heritage Site on Sri Lanka's south coast, about a 10 to 15 minute drive from Villa Inlet Galle. Here's what to see, and how to plan your visit.

If Galle Fort is the main reason for your trip, Villa Inlet Galle makes a quiet base close by — near enough for an easy visit, far enough to come home to a calm, bayfront setting rather than the busy fort walls.

About Galle Dutch Fort

Galle Fort is a fortified old town on Sri Lanka's south coast, built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and substantially expanded by the Dutch in the 17th century. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its intact ramparts, a lighthouse on the southern point, and streets of colonial-era buildings that are now home to cafés, boutiques and guesthouses. It remains a living neighbourhood, not a museum piece — people still live and work inside the walls.

Getting from Villa Inlet Galle to the fort

The fort is roughly 10 to 15 minutes south of the villa by tuk-tuk or car. We are glad to arrange a driver for the trip — just let us know when you'd like to go, and we can time it for the last hour before sunset, when the ramparts are at their best for walking and photographs.

What to see on the ramparts

  • The full loop of the sea-facing ramparts, roughly 90 minutes at a walking pace
  • The lighthouse and the Flag Rock bastion, a popular spot to watch the sunset
  • The old Dutch Reformed Church and the clock tower
  • The narrow lanes inside the walls, with independent cafés, boutiques and galleries
  • The Maritime Archaeology Museum, housed in a former Dutch warehouse

Where Villa Inlet Galle fits in

Rather than staying inside the fort walls, Villa Inlet Galle sits on the bayfront a short drive north, with its own private beach area, a courtyard swimming pool and a garden backing onto the Gin River estuary. It suits travellers who want to visit the fort for a day (or a sunset) without staying inside its narrow lanes for the whole trip. See the rooms and facilities, or read more about the wider area in our guides to beaches near Galle and things to do in Galle.
