Galle & the coast
Things to Do in Galle, Sri Lanka
Between the fort, the coast and the river, Galle has enough to fill a few days without ever needing a long transfer. Here's what we point our guests toward.
Walk the ramparts of Galle Dutch Fort
The obvious starting point: a UNESCO World Heritage Site with Dutch colonial streets, a working lighthouse and ramparts that circle the old town. It's about a 10 to 15 minute drive from Villa Inlet Galle. We've written a full guide to Galle Fort with more detail on what to see there.
Take a boat ride on the Gin River
Villa Inlet Galle sits on the Gin River estuary, and boat trips exploring the mangroves, birdlife and small river islands can be arranged locally — a quieter way to spend a few hours than the busier tourist sites.
Spend a day at the beach
From the villa's own beach area to Unawatuna, Mirissa and Weligama, the coast around Galle has a beach for most tastes, from calm swimming bays to surf breaks. See our full guide to beaches near Galle.
Whale and dolphin watching
In season, boat operators in nearby Mirissa run whale and dolphin watching trips, one of the more popular day excursions from this part of the south coast.
Browse Galle Fort's shops and cafés
Inside the fort walls, the old Dutch colonial buildings house a mix of boutiques, art galleries, cafés and the Maritime Archaeology Museum — an easy way to spend a couple of unhurried hours after visiting the ramparts.
